It’s dark. It’s cold. It’s miserable. It’s the time of year you don’t even want to think about leaving the house. But you should resist the urge to curl up and hibernate under your doona, as there are some great things happening out there in chilly Melbourne. The perfect example of this is that the month of August sees the fleeting appearance of one of the most exciting and stimulating spaces to open in Melbourne in recent memory – the Cake Wines Pop-Up Bar. Nestled away down a little alley off Kerr St in Fitzroy this cosy little bar is, for one month, host to a wide variety of fascinating screenings, talks, performances and wine tastings.
Cake Wines, an Australian-owned boutique wine business, prides itself in not only making delicious wine, but also being immersed in and cultivating creativity and culture. This passion is very much reflected in the program for its Melbourne pop-up bar. Performances by amazing bands such as Alpine, screenings of award winning documentaries Searching for Sugarman and Bill Cunningham: New York, filmmakers presenting and discussing their culturally relevant work such as Love & Sex in an Age of Pornography, and insightful talks by Melbourne’s new The School of Life are just some of the impressive events on offer. And then of course there is the wine. Lots of wine.
If talks, films and music aren’t your thing it’s still very much worth visiting the Cake Wines Pop-Up Bar before it moves on. The charmingly rustic little space is very welcoming and the portable heaters work hard to keep you warm during these chilly winter nights. Be sure to arrive early to score one of the cushioned booths and you will likely stay for hours and hours drinking and talking the night away. The bar does offer a very limited selection of beer and cider, however it’s the wine that’s what you will want to be drinking and there is a healthy selection to chose from. The Cake Wines Pop-Up Bar also offers some delicious food to accompany your drinks in the form of a yummy antipasto selection as well as some more substantial options available on their specials board.
With only a few weeks left be sure to make the effort to visit the Cake Wines Pop-Up Bar before it vanishes. Whether you attend one of the great curated events, or just stop by for a glass of their great pinot noir, you will not be disappointed. This is certainly a must-visit destination in Melbourne this August.
