Lanky, awkward and full of a seemingly unending supply of energy, Frank Woodley was simply born for comedy. He has been an Australian favourite since his days working alongside Colin Lane; both on stage and on our TV screens in the delightful The Adventures of Lano and Woodley, and subsequently in his ventures into solo comedy. 2014 sees Frank Woodley continue delivering great comedy with his show Fool’s Gold playing at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
Fool’s Gold doesn’t stray very far from Woodley’s winning formula, and this is a very good thing. The show is chock full of visual gags, mild slapstick, hilarious anecdotes, charming songs and creative audience participation. All of which result in an utterly charming and downright hilarious night of comedy.
Woodley’s physical presence on stage is second to none, and is arguably the key to his success. Constantly moving, miming and fidgeting; his energetically nervous stage persona is quick, clever and always fascinating to watch. Similarly his approach to humour is fast and smart, never mean spirited and always hilarious.
Delving into too much detail about the show itself would ruin the fun, but expect ribbon twirling, songs about untrustworthy flies, school yard anecdotes and NERF guns. Fool’s Gold is an absolute pleasure and not to be missed.
