LUMINOUS @ MFF: a glow in the dark performance that will leave you mesmerized

The Melbourne Fringe Festival has officially kicked off, delivering a program full of exciting and conceptual live art performances, shows and experiences for Melbournians and visitors alike. One of the most intriguing and capturing shows this year is LUMINOUS – an incredible combination of black-light body art and acrobatics colliding to tell a story of a garden that comes alive, as seen through the eyes of a whimsical creature who slowly becomes one with the creatures inhabiting the garden.

The show starts with said creature waking up, it’s neon colours coming to life bit by bit. As it starts to wake, other creepy crawlies also start to rise and the playfulness begins. A female lizard-like creature contorts and writhes while a male leopard printed creature of the night begins a courting process to woo the female, shooting out a neon orange web-like stream. He uses this to perform an impressive acrobatic dance that keeps you in suspense the whole way through.

There are some small wobbles in the show with dropped hula hoops and some acrobatic stumbling, but the performers all keep moving forward in a very professional manner. The body art is simply incredible. Most is painted pre-show, while some is painted on live in front of your eyes.

The show runs for about 50 minutes and it is recommended that you take seat further away from the front of set, to increase the effects of the illusionary experience.
