Tennis Action @ South Wharf Promenade

As the temperatures rise both on and off the court, Common Man South Wharf provides the perfect opportunity to sit back, relax, and watch the tennis

It’s the new year and for most of us it’s like hitting the reset button. New resolutions are made to further better ourselves, gyms spaces have suddenly become hot real estate and we start (reluctantly) getting back to work. With a bit of luck, we might actually see a full summer to ease the transition. There is one defining event that is on everybody’s mind for the weeks of January – the tennis!

Yes, the Australian Open is back for another year and Melbourne goes tennis crazy. We just can’t get enough of it. Whether it’s watching the five-set battles played out to the wee hours of the night or being part of the crowd cheering on our favourites, the tennis is loved by all. Some will be lucky enough to see it in the flesh. For those of us less fortunate (or just forgot to purchase tickets) watching the tennis doesn’t necessary mean being at home on the couch. This year, Common Man on South Wharf Promenade is using their front yard to broadcast the Australian Open on a 15 meter square screen. With the grass laid out, beach chairs and tables accounted for, it’s the perfect hang out to enjoy this summer sport.

Not only will the tennis be broadcasted day and night, but there will be plenty to eat and drink. A pop-up kitchen has been installed and will include the chef and cooks of South Wharf Promenade’s finest restaurants. The line up includes BangPop (Thai street food), Akachochin (Japanese), Bohemian (Spanish), Meat Market (Australian BBQ) and Common Man (Australian fare) who will be providing yummy food as the tennis action unfolds. Not to mention drinks, with Plus 5 providing daily happy hour cocktail specials.

If you fancy some tennis action and don’t want the hassle of venturing to Melbourne Park, then come down to South Wharf. The tennis will be on and if you want to get in on the action, a daily Wii Tennis Competition will operate from 6 – 7pm (the overall winner will win a Wii!)! There is plenty of food and drink options as you relax over the city skyline and watch some exceptional matches – it may just be the best location to watch the tennis this year.
