A photo guide through Thailand: Part 3

There are many reasons for why we all travel. It might be to chase the summer sun, to experience something completely novel or to temporarily forget the pressures from work and recharge. Mr LB from Brunch Addict had a strong urge to leave Melbourne and experience life at a different pace. Within a week of leave being confirmed, flights and a tour with Geckos Adventures was booked.

This travel series in photos shows a different experience to what some might typically think of Thailand on the Tales of Old Saim tour by Geckos Adventure.

Arriving at the ancient city of Ayutthaya is like stepping back through time. This ancient city was founded in the 13th century and originally was a haven from the small pox outbreak. Over the centuries, countless buddhist temples and statues had been forged and destroyed through various conflicts, including the destruction of the city in 1767 by the Burmese army. Today, the ruins of the old city can be closely explored by curious locals and tourists. Walking through the ruins creates an appreciation of the astonishing architecture and what life was like. There is an eerie atmosphere and the damage and pain caused by the conflict hangs in the air.

After visiting the old city, you can hire a bike and explore the connected lanes and hidden gems of the new city, or perhaps take a guided tour on the back of an elephant.
