Fading in … A man cries at the top of his voice of wanting to be a poet, but the darkness of his familiar surroundings curbs his dream.
Fading in … A woman and her husband are taken at gun point as they speed away in a stolen police vehicle.
Fading in … A man in a new city has the dreams that could touch the sky, but being in the wrong place at the wrong time led to dire consequences.
THE EXONERATED is the latest theatre production to touch down at Chapel off Chapel. This raw and powerful production recounts the lives of six Americans wrongfully committed of murder and sentenced to death. The play is directed/producer by Andrei Schiller-Chan, written by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, and supported by a passionate front and back stage team. With an impressive star line up of actors and actress, the play tells the tragic stories uncompromised and richly raw.
The stage is fully utilised with familiar home furniture and decor that allows the audience to feel as though they are a guest of each characters homes – a safe and non-judgmental zone. The play teases – and at time exploits – a full range of emotions of their accounts with the law and the brutality suffered at the hands of ‘the system’. While each story is unique but encompasses common themes, it’s hard not to feel angry, sad, happiness and admiration.
It’s a performance that will burn in our hearts and minds for years to come. It highlights the brutality and effects of being on death row, especially when they never committed such crimes. Raw and powerful, this play is one to see and remember.
