9pm – So, I’m excited. Next week I go on holidays to tropical Northern Queensland and in preparation for a great break, I have decided to do a three day juice cleanse to cleanse my body of the recent horrible things I have been abusing it with: burgers, take away Greek, Thai, you name it. If it’s fast, I’ve been eating it. With cash in my hand from payday, I was determined to make this happen – I’ve been thinking about doing a cleanse for well over a year and now I’m finally going to make it happen.
I have decided to do the three day Advanced cleanse by Pressed Juices, which I figured would be a challenge but not ridiculous. There are three levels to the cleanse: beginners, advanced and master. The number of green juices is what differentiates the levels. For those who are really game, there is also a five day cleanse available but, being new to this and obsessed with both coffee and food, I figured three days was probably enough. I’m not sure how I will do on this challenge, but I am really interested to see if it will really ‘energise’ me in the way that I have read.
7am – I’m not feeling hungry but take my first juice – the “The Black Lemonade” (Alkaline Water, Lemon, Activated Coconut Charcoal, Cayenne) anyway. It is thin and has a strong lemon taste so I sip it through the morning. Strangely, this drink makes me feel thirsty for water.
8am – I am starting to feel a bit hungry, so I dig into my second juice for the day – “Smooth Energy” (Coconut Water, Pineapple, Banana, Lettuce, Cucumber, Kale, Avocado, Lime). I don’t feel guilty for cracking into this one so quickly as I was advised by the Pressed Juices lady to have my first smoothie soon after my morning tonic water. It is thick and filling. I took over half an hour to drink it on my way in and was stuffed by the end of it.
11am – I don’t really need another juice as I’m still feeling full from my first drink, but I am slowly sipping through “Greens 2” (Spinach, Cucumber, Lettuce, Celery, Kale, Parsley, Apple, Lemon). It’s a thin drink, but more satisfying than the tonic water I had first thing. I am going to the bathroom a bit more often than usual but that’s expected as I have had 3 glasses of water in addition to the juices I had in the morning. To be honest, I’m feeling a bit bloated. I also had a mild headache at 10am from coffee withdrawals, but that’s now dissipated.
2pm – I was starving by around 1pm and pushed myself to not start my next drink until acloser to 2pm. I had the “Earth 2” (Carrot, Grapefruit, Sweet Potato, Rainbow Chard, Lime, Radish, Ginger) which was quite satisfying. I can’t help but notice that I am bit colder than normal in the office.
5pm – at around 3pm I was going in and out of concentration. With a bit of a walk around the office I was rejuvenated and focused again. I can safely say that I’m not hungry! I had the “Zest 4” (cucumber, pineapple, coconut, lemon) on the way home and was stuffed. I still had three more to go!!
9pm – I’ve had my “Greens 5” (carrot, cucumber, lettuce, celery, spinach, kale, lemon, parsley, ginger) drink around 7pm and my dessert for the evening – Red Velvet (raspberry, coconut flesh, raw cacao, almond mylk, coconut nectar). It was way too sweet for me and I struggled to get all the way through it. I am so ridiculously stuffed, but my eyes keep darting to actual food in the house. I have a headache and I feel bloated. It’s cold in the house and I’m tempted to run to the bedroom and hide under the doona. I still have one last drink to have but I’m so stuffed I can’t imagine how I’ll fit it in.
11pm- determined to take the diet as subscribed, I warmed up the “Slippery Elm” (Alkaline Water, Licorice Root, Marshmallow Root, Chia Seeds, Slippery Elm Bark Powder, Cinnamon) and had it just before bed. This was both wonderful and gross; the flavours were beautiful and like a chai tea but the texture got more and more off putting as one of the ingredients is quite slimey and the ‘slime’ texture had traveled throughout the drink.
6am – I woke up not feeling hungry. Surprisingly, I am not missing food today. My tummy rumbled and it was time for a trip to the bathroom.
9am – I picked up my juices freshly made at about 7:30am. I drank the black lemonade fast and started sipping on my Smooth Energy smoothie at 8am on the train into work. My tummy has started rumbling again making my trip in a little uncomfortable, but I am energetic and alert. I can’t help but notice how ‘tight’ my tummy feels – in a good way. I feel leaner and my hip bones have risen to the surface a bit. It feels good.
11am – three juices down and I’m feeling good. No headaches, no bloating, just satisfied. The only downer is there was cake in the kitchen and I couldn’t have any. I am feeling a little tired but my concentration levels are good and there have been no dizzy spells. I am a bit cold though, so having warm water is helping.
1pm – it’s time for my fourth drink – the “Greens 2”. I’m not feeling nearly as bloated as I did yesterday but the tiredness is starting to sink in. My drink is making my mouth feel a little dry.
4pm – there was a big dip in energy between 2pm and 3pm and I’ve been cold all afternoon (although, to be fair, it is a cold day). I am pushing through, but would prefer to be curled up in bed. I am happy to be enjoying my “Zest 4” – it’s quite a tasty treat and I love the pineapple in it.
8pm – I am freezing. I am curled up on the couch and I have had my green juice and sipping a different “dinner/dessert” drink. This time it’s the “Spiced Almond Mylk” (Almond Mylk [Filtered Water, Almonds, Sea Salt] Cinnamon, Cardamom, Nutmeg, Vanilla Bean). It’s heavenly, but on a cold winters night I’d rather be having something warm. My partner ordered pizza and I did something a bit creepy.. I opened the box and inhaled deeply, the forbidden food I know I cannot have.
10pm – I decide to have “The Slippery Elm” cold tonight and it is much, much better. I actually really loved this drink and the chia seeds on the bottom created a beautiful sweetness. I realised that the coating of the seeds was slippery and was what had put me off the warm version the night before.
6am – I am feeling tired and weak. I know I have to travel to Pressed Juices after 7am if I want to pick up my drinks and get some energy but I roll over and go back to sleep.
9am – I have picked up my juices and feeling like the day is mine to own. I am not feeling ‘extra’ energetic, but energetic enough. I have noticed my stomach has flattened out (rather than the bloating fast-food puff I had before) and I am at my lowest set-weight (whereas, when I started this, I was at my +2kg mark). I have not gone to the toilet other than to expel the liquid.
11am – I am starting to tire again, but it’s Saturday so I know I can go home and sleep soon. I am already sipping on my “Earth 2” and I can’t help but wonder if I’m going through my juices too quickly today. I am thinking about all the foods I am going to stuff my body with once I get off this detox (perhaps I will try one of Melbourne’s new burger hot spots? Have a big brunch tomorrow? Pancakes?).
2pm – I have had a nice rest for a couple of hours and I’m feeling bright and energetic! There’s a bunch of neglected chores I need to get onto, but it’s been a while since my last drink, so I better get onto that first. I am now thinking about how tomorrow I should perhaps try to order something healthy so as not to undo the efforts of the last three days.
4pm – After a burst of energy I am starting to feel a little on the tired side, but I don’t think that’s any different to normal really. I am onto my “Zest 4” which was tasty. It’s so weird how I don’t miss eating (but I do miss the act of eating).
8pm – I’m freezing cold again and I am on my last drink of the detox. I’m feeling determined to see this thing through and I can’t believe I have managed to go 3 days without eating food. I am tempted to stay up until midnight and they eat some popcorn, but I know that’s not the right answer.
Physically I’m feeling very happy with the effects of the detox. I have lost 2.7kgs in the 3 days, which is the fastest I have ever lost weight. I attribute this largely as water weight being stored in my body thanks to the high sodium content I was having pre-detox, but hey – kilos are kilos and I’m stoked. The first day was definitely the worst, with bloating, dizziness and headaches, but going into day 2 I was largely fine. Doing this during a holiday period would probably be better so you could take naps during the day rather than push through work like I did. So the big question.. Would I do it again? I think yes. If I felt like I was verging on losing control of my weight again I would definitely do it. It was a great way to rapidly lose water weight and motivate myself to get back on the healthy eating wagon.
